When it comes to spreading holiday cheer, nothing says “Merry Christmas” quite like a beautifully decorated outdoor space. From twinkling lights to festive inflatables, outdoor Christmas decorating transforms your home into a beacon of holiday spirit. Whether you’re aiming for classic elegance or a playful winter wonderland, here’s everything you need to know to make your outdoor space shine this season.
1. Start with a Vision
Before you dive into decorating, take some time to plan your theme. Here are a few popular ideas:
• Classic Christmas: Red bows, evergreen garlands, and warm white lights.
• Winter Wonderland: Cool white and blue lights with snowflake motifs.
• Santa’s Workshop: Inflatables, colorful string lights, and whimsical touches like candy canes.
• Nature-Inspired: Pinecones, natural wreaths, and soft white lights for a rustic look.
2. The Foundation: Lights, Lights, Lights
Outdoor lights are the backbone of your Christmas display. Here’s how to get started:
• String Lights: Use them to wrap trees, shrubs, and railings. LED options are energy-efficient and come in various colors and styles.
• RGB Light Panels: Wash your walls with color, light up trees and their foliage if you don’t want to use string lights.
•Staked-in C7 or C9 lights: Use them to outline your driveway, catwalk, garden island perimeters, and other areas you wouldn’t think to illuminate.
Whatever you do, a tangled ball like the one below – while funny and makes one think of Clark Griswold – is not decorating. Quick and witty? Sure! But that’s not what we are aiming for. ☺️

• Net Lights: Perfect for bushes and hedges, these save time while ensuring even coverage.
• Icicle Lights: Great for rooflines to mimic dripping icicles.
• Permanent Christmas lights that will be hard-wired into your home a d invisible to the naked eye unless you know what you are looking for. These are installed in small channels that are painted the same color as your fascia and are hidden in plain sight. No more ladders, no more dealing with nerves as you climb high up on the rooftop. The company you call will come and do it and help you set up your phone’s app to gain control. Once it’s done, you have lights all year round to celebrate any holiday, all year-round!
Example of one brand in video below:
• Pathway Lights: Light the way with stakes featuring candy canes, stars, or other festive shapes.
Pro Tip: Use timers to turn lights on and off automatically, saving energy and ensuring your display runs smoothly.
I personally enjoy Enbrighten’s units since they connect through an app on my phone which allows me to set schedules or quickly turn them on or off.

3. Deck the Walls and Doors
Your home’s exterior walls and doors offer prime decorating opportunities.
• Wreaths and Garlands: Hang a wreath on the door and frame windows and railings with evergreen garlands. Add ribbons, ornaments, or pinecones for extra flair.
• Window Décor: Attach suction cups to hang wreaths, stars, or bells on windows.
4. Add Yard Displays
Turn your front yard into a festive scene:
• Inflatables: Choose from snowmen, reindeer, Santa, or even movie characters for an eye-catching display.
• Figures and Signs: Consider nativity scenes, nutcrackers, or “Merry Christmas” signs.
• DIY Touches: Paint wooden cutouts or repurpose old items, like turning an old sled into a holiday accent.
5. Layer in the Details
Small details bring the entire display together:
• Bows and Ribbons: Add oversized bows to wreaths, railings, or lampposts.
• Lanterns and Candles: Place LED candles in lanterns for a cozy glow.
• Ornaments: Use weatherproof ornaments to decorate trees, bushes, or garlands.
6. Prioritize Safety
While decorating outdoors is fun, safety should always come first:
• Weatherproof Materials: Use outdoor-rated lights and decorations that can withstand snow, rain, and wind.
• Secure Fastening: Use clips, hooks, and zip ties to secure lights and decorations.
• Ladder Safety: Always have someone hold the ladder if you’re hanging decorations at height.
• Electrical Safety: Avoid overloading outlets and use outdoor-rated extension cords with GFCI protection. We will get into that in the next post; how to figure out how many lights you can use and if you need more outlets for your display.
7. Get the Whole Family Involved
Decorating outdoors can be a festive family activity. Let kids help choose themes, hang ornaments, or set up inflatables. Turn it into a tradition by adding hot cocoa and holiday music to the mix.
8. Showcase Your Display
Once your decorations are complete, share your festive masterpiece! Take photos during the evening hours when the lights are most vibrant. Share them on social media or invite friends and neighbors to take a stroll past your home.
This holiday season, let your outdoor decorations spread joy far and wide. With a little planning, creativity, and teamwork, your home can become the most festive house on the block. So grab your lights, untangle those cords, and let the holiday magic begin!
Here’s mine for now. I still have a way to go. I did have to add outlets to the exterior of my home to make sure we didn’t have everything shut down once it is all up.

I hope this guide helps you get started on your outdoor decorating journey! Best of luck, Besties!
